Coffee Shops

What follows is a list of the coffee shops where the interviews took place, as well as a few of my other favorites:

Vågal Kaffe og Vin

Bergen, Vestland

I visited Vågal Kaffe og Vin for the first time with Ann-Kristin and since then, it has become one of my favorite places in Bergen. Oddly enough, neither of us actually ordered coffee during our trip (seemingly a crime), but they have tea lattes, and we simply could not turn them down.

Ann-Kristin had a true chai tea latte made with a chai tea bag, rather than syrup, which is a frequent substitute. Here is what she thought:

  • Description of flavor: sweet with a milky, cinnamon flavor, light, “tastes like Christmas”

  • Rating: 7/10

I ordered a matcha latte (which is made with oat milk) with honey. Since this interview, I started going  Vågal weekly to get this drink, if that is any indication of how much I enjoyed it:

  •  Description of flavor: earthy with a sweet aftertaste, smooth, frothy, rich

  • Rating: 10/10

Our overall description of the ambiance/atmosphere:

Vågal is incredibly cozy and filled with plants, origami, and artwork. The bookshelves, couches, and board games make it feel like a well-lived in home that isn’t so tidy you cannot relax. It seems like a busy place but has plenty of seating and so the busyness gives it energy, rather than being overwhelming.

Det Lille Kaffekompaniet

Bergen, Vestland

My first trip to Det Lille Kaffekompaniet ("The Little Coffee Company") was with Camilla and Grethe for their interview (check it out under March posts!).  It is cozied in a slender cobblestone street just off the base of the funicular that goes up up Mt. Fløyen, and it is quite possibly the perfect post hike stop.

At this stop, I had a cappuccino with oat milk, and I can say, with certainty, it is the best cappuccino I have ever had (I could not exaggerate if I wanted to).

  • Description of flavor: smooth, toasty but not burnt, bold, (froth was *chef’s kiss)
  • Rating: 10/10

Overall description of the ambiance/atmosphere:

Det Lille Kaffekompaniet is quaint and intimate. There are around four tables with two or three chairs for each inside and a few tables outside; there are also a few window seats, which makes it a perfect solo spot. You can tell it is intended to be a space to enjoy coffee and perhaps read a book, rather than pull out your work and stay for hours.
